SUMMER WINE SPECIAL

Big retailer recommendations and a plea for the little guy

At long last I have got my act together and collated my full list of recommendations for each of the big wine retailers. Click on your wine supplier below to find out how I rate their summer range.

I have categorised each of the retailers in the following price brackets:
·up to £5
·£5 to £10
·£10 to £15 and
·over £15

There are some really interesting trends, some top value and some real bargains to be had .

Again the wines each get a Drinker Rating, this is a score out of 100 according to quality price and value, don’t forget that value doesn’t always mean cheap.

Lastly, please don’t think that buying wine begins and ends in the supermarket, remember the small independent retailers who have the time and expertise to help you buy exactly the right wine for every occasion. These guys know what they’re talking about, they have great selections of wines produced by artisan winemakers - not the mass bulk that the supermarkets have to demand, they can tell you a story behind each and every bottle on their shelf and buying local is the way to go.

If you’ve always walked past your local independent wine shop but were always afraid to go in, give it a go this Saturday, they want to see you, they care about their wine and I promise they won’t be as expensive as you’re expecting.

For those of you in my neck of the woods in Milton Keynes, call in and see Simon at The Stony Wine Emporium www.stonywineemporium.co.uk and tell him The Drinker sent you. And look out for my wine reviews from the independents coming soon.
